in the year 2003 (October - December)

January - March   |  April - June   |   July - September    |   October - December

On 19th. of November, Fr. james conducted a one day program at Mariengasse, Graz, for a crowd of more of 700 from all over Austria. This is the concluding day of all his preaching in Europe before he goes to India. The presence of such a large number of people was an encouragement for the St. Thomas Charismatic prayer group that organized the preaching program of Fr. James in Austria; also it was an expression of people's love and appreciation towards Fr. james and his ministry. In a meeting with the St. Thomas group, Fr. James gave the dates for the next year's retreats programs in Austria. Here are few photos

From 13th to 16th of November, Fr. James conducted a "growing in the Spirit" seminar for thousands of people who gathered in the Cathedral Church of Krk, Croatia. It is for the second time that Fr. James is preaching in Krk. All his talks were deepening the faith and love of the people for Jesus, the Church and sacraments. Everyday people were in queue to give testimonies of healings and conversions.

Retreat at Subotica, Serbia and Montenegro. 6 to 9 of November

Fr. James at Subotica in Serbia – Montenegro

From 6th to 9th of November 2003, Fr. James preached a charismatic seminar in the large churche of St. Michael of the Franciscan order at Subotica with more than 2500 people. On all the days, the church was packed and many people had to stand outside the church to listen to the speech and to have a healing touch of Jesus during the prayer or the mass. On the third day of the Seminar. Bishop Janos Penzes, the Bishop of Subotica celebrated the Mass with many priests and gave a message to the people assembled. He very clearly said that Catholic Charismatic renewal is one of the best renewals in the Church that attracts millions to Jesus. He highly appreciated the world wide ministry of Fr. James Manjackal and said, “I wonder how you travel to so many places and countries by land and by air and still you are young and energetic and bringing people to The Lord. For me it is a miracle rather than the miracles that I see here in the prayers”. The Bishop thanked Fr. James in a special way, as an expression of his love and gratitude gave a hug during his sermon by going to the place where Fr. James was seated.

Serbia Montenegro is the centre part of the old Yugoslavia after Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and Macedonia became independent countries. Serbia Montenegro has a population of 10.500.000 with a territory of 88.361 Km². The Orthodox believers form 65% of the population with its Patriarchate in Belgrade, the capital of the country. The name Serbia means that the Orthodox believers in this land are identified as Serbians, hence they have a strong nationalistic feelings which was a reason of the fighting against other religions and ethnic groups in the late Balkan war. There are 19% of Muslims from the Slavs, and 4% of Catholics from the Croatian, Albanian and Hungarian ethnic origins. The Catholics have seven dioceses of which one is Greek Catholic with 22.000 members and 18 priests with seventeen parishes. Although the archdioceses of the Catholic Church, is Belgrade, 75% of the Catholics are living in the dioceses of Subotica with 130 parishes and 102 priests. Although the Orthodox Church claims to have baptised all the Serbs, their churches remained emptied and their believers do not know even the basic teachings of the Bible or the Church. By intermarriages, the Catholic Church looses many of her members as she is not ready to accept the orthodox who do not know the basic teachings of Christianity! The people are known for their various superstitions, black magic, witchcraft, tarot cards, fortune teller, etc. Hare Krishna movements and many other Hindu-Budist sects are attracting the people by the new age healings. There is a satanic church in Subotica called MWM (Black roads). During Communist rule none of these people had any hold in the country, but when the country became independent all such groups started operating. The Pentecostal evangelical churches and Jehova’s witnesses also are growing steadily.

Subotica was a famous place before the 2nd. World War as it was one of the most civilized and economical rich countries in Europe, when more than 50.000 Germans and 10.000 Jews lived there. Nazis killed 4.000 Jews during the war. Fr. James and the team Gaby Landauro, Ksenija Abramovic and others visited the old Jewish Synagogue which is the biggest in the whole Europe in the front of which a monument of the 4.000 Jewish holocaust is situated! Also they visited the Cathedral Church of Subotica. At present Montenegro has the problem of 7000 gypsies, who came away from Kosovo, the recently liberated province. Many of them walk around the country as beggars without any job. Kosovo is under the UN Security Force, and it can be called a no-man’s land at present as it is not fully independent and at the war it was completely destroyed and no proper rebuilding is done. At present, Kosovo is a province of Serbia Montenegro, which is waiting for its full independence. Serbian Orthodox Church is one of the most Orthodox group to reunite with the catholic Church because they fear they will loose their Serbian identity if they would became Catholics.

Mass with Father James Manjackal

Otac James: Kršćanin treba biti u Kristu i rasti u njemu, jer samo tada prima snagu i energiju za životWhat were 2500 citizens of Subotica searching for in the Franciscan church 4 days in a row, 5-6 hours a day? It is not very often that the church can be seen filled  with so many people so cheerful and joyful. It was the seminar of charismatic renewal that has brought new hope and new strength for our lives. How is it possible that so many people are moved by this seminar? The answer is simple: people are searching for spiritual values, they are lacking this dimension of spirituality, they understand that they may possess everything in the world, but they can not buy the peace in their souls, nor health, nor life. It was the simple practice of Christian beliefs. What we heard at the seminar was nothing new, everything was already familiar from the Bible or Church tradition, and this is what is common to all Christian churches, whether they are Catholic or Orthodox or Evangelicals or Reformed.

A Catholic missionary coming from India, Fr. James Manjackal, gave a seminar of  the Charismatic Renewal . He was born on April 18, 1946 in Cheruvell, Kottayam, in the state of Kerala in southern India, and he was ordained a priest on April 23, 1973, as a missionary of St. Francis de Sales (M.S.F.S.) in the southwest province of India. He worked as a missionary in Viskhapatnama for a year and after that he was appointed professor at the seminary of St. Francis de Sales in Ettumanoor, Kerala. Fr. James himself was healed both spiritually and physically when he met the Living Jesus by the prayer of the young man who called upon him the power of the Holy Spirit. Since then he has been preaching charismatic seminars all over the world. At his first charismatic seminar that was held in the year 1976, he preached in Malayalam, his mother tongue. During the last 27 years of his preaching ministry he faced many temptations and sufferings, he was kidnapped by members of his own nation and arrested by non-Christians in the Gulf countries. But under all circumstances he proved himself to be a faithful and loyal servant of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  By his presence he showed all the citizens of Subotica that people know how to rejoice and to accept real values and also that the Church is a living community and not just some big institution.

Fr. James in Macedonia

At the gate of 15th century
port built by Macedonians
against Turks at Kale
In Acts of the Apostles 16: 9ff, we read that St. Paul had a vision of a Macedonian calling him to go to Macedonia to evangelise and that along with his disciples, he went to Philippi, Thessalonica, Boroea, Ephesus which were then parts of Macedonian province of Greco-roman Empire . The present Macedonia is a small republic of 25713 km² with Skopje as the capital with a population of 2.038.000 inhabitants. It is surrounded by Serbia Montenegro, Kosovo, Greece, Albania and Bulgaria. Ethnically 67% are Macedonians, 23% Albanians, 4% Turkish, 2,3 % Muslims, 2,2% Gypsy and 1,5% Serbs. Among them 67% are Orthodox Christians, 30% Muslims, about 1% Catholics and the rest are few Jews and those who belong to evangelical and Pentecostal Churches. The Macedonian Orthodox Church claims to shepherd the majority of the population, but their 1100 Churches remain practically empty. They have only 150 priests. Their old monasteries are at present hotels or restaurants! Spiritually weak steeped in rituals and traditions the Orthodox Church, often actively opposes any evangelical ministry although Methodist, Baptist, Congregational, and evangelical Churches are growing and vigorous new Pentecostal and charismatic Churches are springing up. The president Trajkovski is a believer and a lay preacher of the Methodist Church. The people speak Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish and Serbo-Croatian. Macedonia’s ethnic diversity dominates its political and social existence. Macedonian pluralism resembles segregation more than harmony. Finding a balance between the demands of the respective ethnic minorities, especially the large Albanian population is a challenge for the authorities. When the huge bronze statue of the recently beatified Mother Theresa of Calcutta was erected in the centre of Skopje and named her “daughter of Macedonia”, the people protested because of her Albanian origin although she was born and brought up at Skopje till the age of 18. At present, the Macedonians have an insecurity feeling and fear of war as there is the possibility of an Albanian war.

At the tumb of St. Naum
There are only about 12000 Catholics in Macedonia of which 4000 belong to the Roman Latin rite and 8000 to the Byzantine rite known as Uniats. The majority of the Catholics are ethnic Macedonians followed by Croatians, Albanians, Slovenians, Polish and Hungarians. The believers of the Orthodox Church began reunion movement with the Catholic Church of Rome in 1859 and as a result there are re-united Catholics in Macedonia who are called Uniats. At present both, the Uniats Catholics and Roman rite Catholics are under one Bishop, Joakim Hebut with bi-ritual jurisdiction over his people and he resides in Skopje. He has two metropolitans; the first one is Marko Sopi, who is the apostolic administrator of Kosovo with full jurisdiction over the mainly Albanian population that lives in Kosovo; and the recently appointed Bishop Kiro Stoyanov, who is a Catholic of the Eastern rite (Uniat) with administrative duties for both, the Uniats and the Roman rite Catholics in Macedonia. Bp. Kiro Stoyanov is considered as a betrayer by the orthodox as he came away from their Church and he is expected to be the Bishop of Macedonia as the present one is old enough to retire. Now, there are 11 Catholic Churches with three priests of the Roman rite and 7 from the Byzantine rite. The Roman rite Catholics have their liturgy in Croatian and the Byzantines in Macedonian language. There are around 30 missionaries of the male and female congregations. The male orders are represented by a Lazarist brother from the order of St. Vincent de Paul (Lazarist). There are sisters from the order of St. Vincent de Paul, the Holy Cross, the Eucharist and the Missionaries of Charity of Calcutta. Recently a few Jesuit priests have come to help the diocese. The Bishops and priests say that the Catholics enjoy good relations with the representatives of the two other main religions, the Orthodox and Islam.

Monastery of St. Naum
who did many
miracles and healings
After the First World War, the Macedonian land was partitioned between the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenians which together was called “Royal Yugoslavia”, Bulgaria and Greece. In the Royal Yugoslavia, Macedonia was referred as “Southern Serbia”. After the 2nd. World War in 1945, Macedonia became part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This was the first time that the Macedonian nation was officially recognised. Yugoslavia was ruled by communist ideologies which was opposed to any form of religion hence both, the Christians and the Muslims, had bitter experience of persecution, but it is the minority Catholics who suffered much as the Communists were opposed more to the Catholic Church, which was subordinate to the centre outside the country, Rome. The communists feared Rome much as Rome, especially Vatican, was opposed to communist ideologies. During this time, the Catholic Church of Macedonia lost between 90.000 to 100.000 hectors of land to the government, which are not given back to the Church until now.

The present Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia were the old Yugoslavia. Yugoslavian government placed Serbs, the Orthodox, in the leading position of the government, which infuriated Catholics who lived in Croatia, Herzegovina and Slovenia, and their reaction caused the Balkan war where the Catholics became enemies of the orthodox and the Muslims. Hence, there are enmity feelings between the Catholics and Orthodox and between the Muslims, which are being healed slowly. The Charismatic retreat preached by Fr. James Manjackal in Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia with thousands of participants, bring forgiveness in the heart of the Catholics towards the Orthodox and Muslims, his emphasis “forgiveness brings healings” has a great impact on the people to come to reconciliation and love. Macedonia became an independent republic on September 17th 1991. The Macedonian Orthodox Church does not have many negative feelings towards the Catholics as they are only a negligent minority.

The huge bronze statue
of Mother Theresa
of Calcutta at Skopje
Fr. James arrived in Skopje along with his team on Sunday October 26th 2003. When the Macedonians were honouring blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta by erecting a large bronze statue in the centre of the city. There was an Episcopal High Mass in the Cathedral Church, where the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is venerated by all as it was the one to which, Mother Theresa in her childhood used to pray. The Church where she was baptised and the house where she was born and brought up are completely destroyed during the war. Fr. James had an interview with the cousin of Mother Theresa, Katarina, who is 90 years old lady, who had the joy of going to Roma for the beatification. She is the only living relative of Mother Theresa living in Skopje. She said that Mother Theresa’s father Nikola died and was buried in Macedonia and the mother Drona in Albania. She had a brother and a sister by name Lazar and Agatha. Agatha was not married but Lazar was married and had only a daughter by name Agatha who went to India for her funeral and to Rome for the beatification.

The Charismatic retreat was preached from 27th to 30th in the same Cathedral and was attended by a large number of people, even by believers of the Orthodox Church. The talks were translated into Croatian, but there were people who did not know Croatian. It is a special charism of Fr. James that when people who do not know English, the language in which he talks or the language to which his messages are translated, understand the content of his messages and receive healings and blessings. Perhaps, like in the apostolic times, the Holy Spirit is working in the hearts of the people with the charism of knowing the Gospel in their own languages! There were many testimonies of conversions and healings. Here are some photos
